Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award Committee

Each year, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) invites members to apply for the Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award. The Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award recognizes and encourages collaboration between school librarians and teachers to teach social justice through joint planning of programs, units, or events using school library resources. The award honors AASL members who design lessons or projects that convey a child’s sense of justice, inspired by the characters in Roald Dahl’s works, particularly Miss Honey from Matilda. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate significant efforts to teach social justice creatively, addressing topics like civil liberties, human rights, or local justice issues. The selection focuses on projects that involve sustained collaboration between librarians and teachers, use of appropriate library resources, and the ability to inspire students to engage in justice, service, or advocacy.

The Roald Dahl’s Miss Honey Social Justice Award committee thoroughly reviews, evaluates, and deliberates on all applications to select and announce the recipient of this esteemed honor.

Deliverables & Outcomes

Reviews award information and encourages and promotes submissions from AASL members.
Ensures accurate and timely review of award applications per specific award policy.
Reviews and submits recommended changes to policy or award criteria to the AASL Board of Directors for consideration at ALA Annual Conference.



Estimated Time Commitment

The committee meets once during the spring on a Saturday. The committee meeting is held virtually and is required: 1 hour

Independent review of applications prior to the committee meeting is required. Approximately 1 hours per application with the total ranging from 4-6 hours. The committee is given approximately three weeks to complete the review of applications.


