Annual Conference Panel
As a division of the American Library Association (ALA), AASL is afforded the opportunity each year to review, evaluate, and select concurrent programming for the ALA Annual Conference. Proposal submitters are required to designate a “jury” to which their proposal is forwarded for evaluation. AASL, along with the other ALA divisions, are considered a “jury,” as well as the general ALA jury. The submission and review process are managed through ALA’s proposal system and coordinated by the ALA Conference Services Office. All submissions to the ALA Annual Conference are reviewed and scored using a standardized rubric. However, the AASL Annual Conference Panel is specifically tasked with evaluating content based on its relevance and appeal to professionals working in the school library setting.
The Annual Conference Panel conducts its work entirely online, with all volunteer activities completed within an approximate 30-day window during the fall.
Deliverables & Outcomes
- Encourages and promotes proposal submissions from AASL members.
- Reviews and scores assigned proposals and includes notes for each session to assist with making final determination.
- Upon request, assists AASL President in identifying potential speaker for the President’s Program.
Estimated Time Commitment
Approximately 30-60 minutes per proposal with total review time ranging from 10-20 hours.
Special Considerations
Reviews will typically take place during late September – early November. If this time of year will not allow for reviews to be completed and submitted, please consider a committee in which work is less concentrated to a specific short time frame. There are no meetings for this committee.
Skills, Knowledge, or Experience
Preferred: Having attended a state or national school library conference.
Committee Composition & Term Length
One chair serving a one-year term.
A minimum of eight members each serving a two-year term.
