AASL Chapter of the Year Award Committee
Each year, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) invites its affiliated school library associations to apply for the distinguished “AASL Chapter of the Year” award. This esteemed recognition honors the significant contributions made by AASL Chapters in advancing the professional development of their members, supporting advocacy and legislative initiatives at the state level, and ensuring active participation and representation at the national level through AASL and the American Library Association (ALA). The AASL Chapter of the Year award committee carefully reviews, evaluates, and deliberates on all applications to select and announce the recipient of this prestigious award.
Deliverables & Outcomes
- Reviews award information and encourages and promotes submissions from AASL members.
- Ensures accurate and timely review of award applications per specific award policy.
- Reviews and submits recommended changes to policy or award criteria to the AASL Board of Directors for consideration at ALA Annual Conference.
Estimated Time Commitment
The committee meets once during the spring on a Saturday. The committee meeting is held virtually and is required: 1 hour.
Independent review of applications prior to the committee meeting is required. Approximately 1-2 hours per application with the total ranging from 2-6 hours. The committee is given approximately three weeks to complete the review of applications.
Special Considerations
Meeting attendance is a requirement to serve.
Skills, Knowledge, or Experience
The AASL Award Committees are a wonderful mixture of those new to committee work and veterans.
Preferred: Current member of an AASL Chapter.
Committee Composition & Term Length
One chair serving a one-year term.
Two to six members serving one-year terms.
